PROGRAMME

DAY 1 - Arrival in Sardinia
Pick up a hire car and head for the hotel in Cagliari where you will spend your first night.

DAY 2 - Cagliari
Explore the culture of Sardinia’s main town and principal port: the most important national archaeological museum in terms of the Nuraghe civilisation (dwellings, temples, fortress, prehistoric round cone-shaped towers).
You will be amazed by the Roman amphitheatre and the upper town in the old hamlet of Castello, which has a Spanish feel to it. Finally, take a look at the Romantic cathedral with its later additions in the Baroque and Neoromantic style, and the Saint Remy bastion which offers a perfect panoramic viewing point.

DAY 3 - A cultural visit to Barumini
Departure for the unusual World Heritage archaeological site of Su Nuraxi di Barumini. It is considered to be the largest Nuraghic fortress on the island, discovered in the 1940s by the most tenacious of Sardinian archaeologists, Giovanni Lilliu. You will also be able to visit the Casa Zapata in the nearby village of Barumini. The extraordinary discovery of this Nuraghe in the middle of a palace built for Baron Zapata of Barumini in the 16th century was made during excavations.
This museum comprises three distinct galleries: archaeological, historical and ethnographic, all situated together inside the Zapata Palace, which is as grand as it is historically significant. During the afternoon, twenty minutes’ drive from Barumini you can stroll around the alleyways of the Chateau de Sanluri, built during the Aragonese period in the 14th century.

DAY 4 - Laconi and AymerichPark
A visit to the small village of Laconi in the Sarcidano region and its treasures: the magnificent Statue Menhir Museum, the wonderful Aymerich Park, a favourite place for botanists, the remains of a medieval castle and the house where Sant’Ignazio of Laconi was born. Also not to be missed are the historic centre of Laconi, the valley of menhirs and its churches.
