SARDINIA: SANT'EFISIO CAGLIARI CELEBRATION

The Procession

On the first four days of May every year, a celebration in honour of Sant’Efisio takes place in Cagliari. This religious festival draws together the faithful, traditional costumes and colours from all over Sardinia to pay tribute and give thanks to the Saint for saving the town from a violent plague epidemic in 1656.

It is a very long pilgrimage with many participants gathering together from all over the island and proceeding along on foot and on horseback. You will see some people on “Traccas”, carts pulled by oxen and decorated with flowers and fruit.

DAY 1 - SANT’EFISIO’S CHURCH
The grand procession begins at 10am with the “Traccas”, followed by groups of people in traditional costume and militia and guards on horseback. The carriage carrying the effigy of Sant’Efiso moves off at midday, proceeds through the town centre and on to a parade in front of the town hall. The pilgrimage continues, stopping several times until it reaches its resting place for the night at Sarroch.

DAY 2 - NORA
The pilgrimage sets off and travels as far as Nora and the shrine to the martyr.

DAY 3 - PULA
Efisio continues his journey to the Roman remains at Nora and on to Pula.

DAY 4 - CAGLIARI
The cortege sets off for Cagliari at 8am and arrives there towards 10.30pm. Before midnight, the great festival is over. Once again, the solemn promise has been fulfilled!
